I presented a session at the circumscribed ASCE SEI Structural Congress session in June 2021. The session was titled “Practical Applications of Emerging Technology” and consisted of a brief introduction with 4 breakouts with each author hosting a conversation on their own topics. My breakout was titled “Advances in Digital Design” and discussed:
- Practical Uses for Reality Capture
- Structural Engineering Exceptionalism from Automation to AI
- 3D visualization to 3D model delivery
- Shifting platforms for communication and personal productivity
For each topic, I (and colleagues from the SEI Digital Design Committee) outlined the “spectrum” of evolution for each topic as well as ways for practicing engineers to engage with these topics and make progress in the short term.
It was a good session and, perhaps because of the recent drop in the price of scanning equipment and the desire for remote monitoring of construction sites, the discussion focused mostly on reality capture and personal productivity (no doubt as a result of the strain that everyone is under as a result of COVID).
