An article I wrote with a colleague from the SEI Digital Design Committee entitled “Communicating in a BIM World” was published in the March 2021 edition of STRUCTURE magazine. The article summarizes the ways in which BIM adoption is placing pressure on structural design teams:
- Truly integrated BIM has been of limited scope and on relatively few buildings
- Shortening design schedules is carrying uncertainty later into the design process forcing redesign work
- For engineers, BIM is not a design tool so engineering happens outside BIM
- We deliver drawings, not models
- The traditional BIM tools don’t capture design status
- Tools don’t replace human-to-human communication
